Illegal immigration, a Federal Issue that the current president and legislators have ignored, as with prior administrations. Why would the paper not print the name of the company that hired cheap labor to work on the roofs of various businesses? Businesses should be fined for hiring illegal immigrants to work in the country. President Bush stated, illegals do jobs that Americans refuse to do! If this is the case, they should modify the immigration process, they should register, get the proper paper work, pay taxes, instead of illegally crossing the border to take jobs from US citizens. I have to believe there are local citizens that would work removing snow from the roofs of various businesses. The problem, they would not work for 3 - 4 dollars/hr.
St. Lawrence County strapped with double digit unemployment and with illegals continually blending into the countryside and farming communities, it makes it more difficult to find employment. North Country residents continue to live on their unemployment or try to live after their unemployment has run out. What if an illegal fell off the roof or was hurt on the job? They would be treated in our emergency room free of charge, at the taxpayers cost. This has to STOP! Employers need to be held responsible for hiring illegal immigrants.
I still continue to wonder why they do not check the status of illegals on all the farms across the North Country. The St. Lawrence River is considered to be the most unsecure board. I am not sure, but Border Patrol Agents have the right to search properties within 100 miles of the board. This is an ongoing problem forcing Arizona to deal with their illegal immigration issues.

I agree with you totally on this one . How do we get to know the employer who hired them. They took the time to give Home Depot name but nothing else.
There is a lot of big farmers in the North Country who hire illegals. They dont want to know so they hire these vendors to furnish them labor. They pay the vendor who in turn pays the worker. No comp. No minimum wage, 16 hr days all the goodies and the Border Patrol looks the other way. Why? No headlines.. Drive some day to Massena. Iroquois dam road always has an agent sitting on it doing nothing. Road blocks held with Troopers and Sheriffs looking for drugs after they have been tipped off..
They can search a car without a warrant (looking for aliens) within 18 miles of the border.
Its the same as always money talks. Remember this summer one or two being lost in a fire near morley.. Farm owned by Murray Fisher of Madrid... What happened? Was Mr. Fisher arrested? Why not? He is or was the local judge wasnt he? Cruikshank farm just got raided and some found.. Whats been done there? NOthing.
Senator Ritchie and Assemblyperson Russell might start a movement in the direction of protecting NYS residents and taxpayers from this situation. We cant accept the answer its a federal problem. Its a state problem and a ST Lawrence County problem..
Farmers and all employers should be responsible for their help. Even if the job is bid out they ought to be responsible to see that everythign is legal and in order
yEH RIGHT. Senator Ritchie... Shes too busy making chili cookoffs possible or at least taking credit for making the Morristown one happen.. Truth about the Morristown cookoff going o without PHD interference.. THEY DO IT BY THE LAW.. Thats what we pay taxes for folk PHD makes thema bide by the law.. Ritchie wanted a few headlines.
Your correct in stating she should look into the local imigration laws being broken constantly.. Make some State laws to deal with these things not just posture for the press.
Both political parties in Washington can take credit for this problem.
I cant even imagine the problems in states such as Arizonia. The one thing I believe is we have a Border Patrol. There are places to check as sstated above. Instead of harrassing motorists on Rte 37, do a little work and investigate some of these farmers like Fisher, Cruikshank, and Greenwood. I know they are rich and have connections but the laws the law and should be applied equally to all. If they arnt going to enforce the law they disband the Border Patrol as we know it.
How easy it would be for a terrorist to slip across the Border up here in the North Country make some friends, rent a cheap room or apt in Ogdensburg then perform some sort of terrorist act in the North Country or elsewhere.. Law Enforcement up here is lax and soft and so is the courts so this would be the perfect breeding grouds for another attack on our nation.
ThePatriot act was supposed to cover us instead they use the Patriot act up here as a tool to intrude on our local drug people and spy on the average citizen who dosnt go with the flow.
Anon 9:13 chili cook off or entering a milking contest with a fixed cow! This is a federal issue that everyone has taken a pass on, because the country has become so liberal. We have the laws in place to fix this problem but the government refuses to take a stand. They try to make everyone happy, pacify the voter, guess what we are sick of being patronized by our legislators.
Every employer should be fined for hiring illegal immigrants. NYS could not pass and would not pass anti-illegal immigration legislation. Over a million illegals live in NYC, but they are not running through our streets at night, therefore it is not an issue. NYS does not support asking if your an illegal. New York City is the end of the journey, South America across multiple boards to reach NYC to work in the black market, the market that does not pay taxes and market that takes jobs for New Yorkers.
Listen folks. The Border Patrol is WELL aware of the hundreds of illegal aliens currently working on the farms throughout St. Lawrence County. The rank and file Agents are FORBIDDEN from entering the farms to check the status of the workers there by POLICY. They are told that it's the job of ICE, even though they all know ICE doesn't want to do work site enforcement either. The only way Border Patrol Agents can arrest the illegals is if they come OFF the farm, something they are instructed by their "employers" not to do.
This policy has been handed down from Washington D.C., so if you'd like something done about it, write your representatives.
Border Patrol Agents would love nothing more than to clean out every single farm, but are handcuffed from doing so.
If you DO happen to see these illegals come off the farm, call 24/7 1-800-689-3362 and report it.
