NYT:Cuomo Considers Cutting Up to 15,000 State Jobs

Governor Cuomo
Governor Cuomo has stepped to the plate and is making the decisions that needed to be made.  Medicaid, and Education consume 2/3 the budget...the problem is local school boards are still giving raises to the teachers in a year when budgets could be cut and a property taxes could be capped.  Bundle this with 15,000 state employee jobs and the 10 billion dollar budget gap will disappears.

Governor has been out to every corner of the State gaining support  for his plan.  He was in Watertown last week with a good crowd that supported his agenda.  Cuomo agenda is aimed at special interest, hit them hard and hit them early...will he gain support from the legislature...will Sheldon Silver give up the property tax cap and cut education's budget?  Silver has been in the Teachers Union's back pocket for many years, is the time right for everyone to change their view on spending?

If he does away with authorities and I mean a good amount of them it will help us in the future but not immediately. I hear he is considering combining the Dept of Public Health, Mental Health and Dept of Social Service.. That really would help.. Also cutting several mandates on Counties and City municipalities would help us.
Our leaders in the City should be considering disolvement as an option and should be looking at all the facts about such a move. We certainly would save money by omitting some layering of Government.

Stop for a minute 11.41 and think. Why would anyone on council wat to lead the charge for disolvement. They would be out a job> The manager would be out a job. The planner out a job. The comptroller out a job. DPW chief and a couple of forman out of work. The police chief could be replaced and probably some of the officers absorbed into the Sheriffs Dept. The firemen could be volunteer with a few paid firemen. The City clerk and her staff could be replaced.... We would proably only savea couple of Million in salaries but the 28 percent that pay the taxes in town are rich and can afford to keep everyone on board and not look at alternatives.

As soon as the governors budget hits the senate the trouble starts. OCF and Cape Vincent will close for sure. The predator unit in Ogdensburg is also on his hit list with another downsizing in their Psyc center in Ogdensburg. Disolvment is the last chance for many communities and I for one agree Ogdensburg needs to do a study a serious study. For a city that is decaying and losing its population as fast as this city is it needs all the help it can muster. The present leadership their cannot be counted on to do the right thing. Articles in recent years in papers in NYC and Ottawa Canada has this City being described as the rusty bumber. With its slums and crime rate drugs and other major crimes on the rise losing jobs faster than they can replace them, a school board out of control, a mayor and councilors out oftouch with the taxpayers . Once Cuomos budget is passed Ogdensburg will die. Of course the city manager will still get his pay.
