Journal:Vaugh: Business District Would Help Downtown

Nick Vaugh
BIDs (Business Improvement Districts) is a defined area within which businesses pay an additional tax or fee in order to fund improvements within the district's boundaries. BIDs may go by other names, such as business improvement area, business revitalization zone, community improvement district, special services area, or special improvement district. BIDs provide services, such as cleaning streets, providing security, making capital improvements, and marketing the area. The services provided by BIDs are supplemental to those already provided by the municipality. (Wikipedia)

Councilor Vaugh has studied BIDs, as with all his other worldly experiences, and believes it could be a success.  Call it what you want, but I call it another tax on the few businesses that still inhabit Ford Street.  How many business are there on Ford Street and what can they afford? If they can afford to pay into this program why would they not improve their buildings.  Most of the services are supplied by the City so why pay twice?

I believe this program may work in areas that already have a number of established businesses in a condensed area with high traffic.  The distribution of business in downtown Ogdensburg make it difficult to effectively implement such a program.  This program has been used to maintain standards and levels of improvement in a business district but not to revitalize something we had 50 years ago.

Election year must be coming up!

Did you know that Ford St. is the only area in Ogdensburg where there's any businesses? Must be with all this attention being paid to ONLY that one street.

Would be nice to see more attention paid to the entire area, including the surrounding communities, to come up with some sort of economic development plan that will affect the community at large.

We cannot expect that the businesses on Ford St. can create such an economic impact that will create jobs or contribute enough to our economy that it will stimulate something.

101. Just off the top of my head I see Murrays store on King St. Corner Deli on Morris St. What about all the business on Patterson St and Park St.. Come on get you head out of your butt. This is just a ploy, spin or whatever by this kid to get attention to himself. he has been selfserving since going on the council and loves the publicity this type of thing gets him. Hes positioning himself for name recognition for the fall elections. Of course it is only another tax ploy. Of course only Ford st would be allowed into it. The other businesses in town can go to hell.. I think Mr. Vaugh needs to attend to his business downtown and quit being a pawn for Nelson and Sciora.

When this guy was running he made several promises. He went door to door and worked hard. To date not many of his promises have been forfilled and hes not working hard for us.
I remember when he tried to force his ideals on the smokers in the park and took glee in doing such. He has voted to raise taxes, he has voted against the four lane highway promotion along with Nelson and Powers only to change their vote a week later when they were outvoted.
He missed several meetings a couple of years ago and was called out by another councilor. He misrepresented the reason he missed. Remember the teeth and he couldnt talk but in fact he was out assisting Matt Doheny in a losing cause.
His worldly experiencesgot him a job this year again with Doheny in another failed bid for Congress. Come to find out he was Doheny go fer guy. He got snacks coffee and taxied Dohenys real staff around the district.
I do like the thinking outside the box as he says but its got to be something to save businesses not assess new fees and taxes on them.
Your right about election time. He will put his nice suit on and come door to door again and blame the rest of the council for his failures.
His grandstanding for the Pepsi Co is still being laughed about in the community and his short lived run for the 118th was a joke. In fact he quit that for personal family reasons which is fine but then he stated he was going towork for Doheny. Which was it?
I ocmmend him for his effort but we dont need the constant grandstanding he does. We want results not hot air and posturing. Any idea to help business is wanted but not just ford st. What we need is a few less talkers and a lot more doers.

Also Chadwick reality is also a business operating illegally with the permission of City Council. They are allowing them to operate out of zone and against the wishes of the neighborhood. Will she have to pay the extra taxes or fees.
When are you going to stand up for what is right and what is blatently wrong Nick.

Nick is an empty suit, a real lightweight without a real job.

This kid was a joke , continues to be a joke and hAS ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE

Hopefully the voters who fell for his line of Nonsense last time around will smarten up and vote for someone with REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE , who actually WORKS for a living and has to support a family and PAY Taxes on something other than a summer job.

Someone or anyone should run against him. He is part of the problem and needs to be replaced.

Nick needs to keep his ambition in check. Pay attention to older and wiser people and probably in 10 years gain enough maturity to do some good locally. His ambition is to be important and be in the spotlight and its hurting him. He dosnt seem smart enough to realize it. Young people his own age and his friends use Ogdensburg topix. Read the comments about him.
His idea is fine to look at. Any idea is fine to look at and get opinions without all the hooplah.. Remember his twitter campaign against our assembly person. Pathetic. He looked like a pompus a-- hole in front of Clarkson in the picture.
Helping people is fine and he should key on that. For instance pay attention to this cheese plant issue. It appears its the citys fault so if it is dont support Cieorra if hes wrong. Dont be status quo like Powers and Nelson.
I give him some hope but little. I think he needs his lifes experiences and needs to get interested in girls like any normal young man. Once your married and get a real job pay some taxes and feel the pain you should come back and help us.. Until then please leave...

Plain and simple why should they pay more for what they have now?
I read your comments in your blog and I agree completely especially the election year comment.
Business on Ford St will do well again once the City does its share in cleaning it up. The councilors must pay more attention to the cities real needs instead of the cosmetic dream of the Riverfront. Vaugh is on the council and should put forth his effort to see this is done.. His very first statement as a councilman at his first meeting he sat and posed for the camera and said he would like to see the city revitalize Ford St. Nick that was almost four years ago and you have done nothing yet. You sit night after night at council meetings rubbing your hands together and staring into the camers and saying absolutely nothing. You take no stand on local issues but seem to like to get the GOP message out whenever possible.. Thats not for us. We need people who really care and want to make a difference .
Grow up and quit posturing for cameras and the media and get to work until we replace you

Vaugh is overwhelmed . His "figity" behavior on camera as you so aptly point out shows a restlessness and is a non verbal signal that he is NOT comfortable with the role and hasn't a clue what to do or how to do it .

Meanwhile the environment in this city continues to rapidly decline . Drug crime is out of hand , certain neighborhoods look like inner city ghettos , other formerly nice neighborhoods are being threatened by proximity of both drug users and sex offenders, the tax base is still disproportionately skewed such that 27% carry 100 % of the tax burden.

YET - in spite of this we TOLERATE smiling vacuous posers and other less than ables on the council and we have no one to blame except those who voted for these representatives .

Get Busy talking to your neighbors and energize them to FIND better candidates and elect them, otherwise there is ZERO chance for any substantive improvement in Ogdensburg.

This is the challenge of the future .

City hall while well intended needs be much more progressive and ACHIEVE visible "substantive" improvements. That requires a council that EXPECTS results and rewards performance and doesn't accept maintenance of the status quo.

Mayor Nelson came to my door, with Nick in tow, looking for support for their election. I talked with Bill about some issues and he introduced Nick, I looked at Nick and said sorry but come back when you have some real life experience.
He has rallied the young crowd, most who only voted during the Obama election. Each and every idea appears to be a grandstand because he has no experience to back-up his issues.
Until he makes it in the really world, he will never make it in the political world. Just what we need is another career politician with no idea how the world really works. He has done well on Facebook, and yes you can subscribe to his tweats but that what all the kids are doing.

OK i'm no longer going to criticize Mr Vaugh I'm done the points have all been made . From here on i am hopeful that the city council will succeed-- they KNOW the problems, so now is the time to pull together and get something positive accomplished

My next action will be in the voting booth

Poly Info... Its nice to agree with you twice now....

This is not a unique idea this has been visited before several times over the years. Nick is just out of touch with the times. this is simply why young people that are interested in local politics should get involved and pay attention and get ideas and learn from people with much more wisdom.
This guy will never get my vote again as I have labeled him a phony career politican wannabe. He is no more interested in Ogdensburg than the man in the moon. He wants to be able to draw attention to himslef in order to phony a resume which factually will be false but look good cosmeticly.
