Journal:Council Votes For Report Attorney

Time to End the Knox Street Debacle
Why do we have a City Attorney? The cost to higher the Wladis Law Firm of East Syracuse is $195.00/hour. This is a very reasonable rate, I wonder what expenses will be added to this fee. They will review the report prepared by our lawyer and make recommendations on how the Knox Street debacle was handled.

The Wladis Law Firm should also look into how grant monies were handled and distributed. Paying $87,000.00 for rehabilitation on City owned property does not seem right. Then the City sells the property for $51,000.00 and they used grant money to pay for the property...nothing seems right in the picture.

You know what they say "If it is seems too good to be true, it must be illegal".

Wayne Ashley was the top vote getter and has been appointed to City Council replacing Doug Sholette.  Councilor Ashley will have some tough issues to deal with at the next council meeting.  On the agenda will be, overriding of the state-legislated 2 percent property tax cap and raising sewer rates. Mayor Nelson under budgeted State Aide last year and received more money than expected.  What happened to the rest of the money?

Do we have any conservatives on this council?

while we're at outsourcing engineering and legal service :>) lets outsource Council and mayor too . Maybe the Wizard of OZ can bring us some leaders with actual courage and brains

That is correct we should outsource all matters concerning Ogdensburg. Our current council can not agree on any issue. Councilor Ashley has never had a orginal thought. He will have to check with the Fred Bean before he speaks on any issue.

The only reason he was the top vote getter was that he never took a position on any issue, never said what he stood for and the sheep of Ogdensburg bought into it.
One Ogdensburg voter was asked by Chris at the journal why he voted for ashley and he replied he knew him. Now you people have to live with him for the next four years.

Ogdensburg is the Joke of St. Lawrence County.

Oh yeah the Council reminds me of the Dumb and Dumber flick .

Apparently a propensity for eating donuts and dyeing one's hair is the NEW standard for excellence for elective office . Woof Woof

We have known Wayne for years. I odnt believe the remarks I,m seeing are fair especially at this point.
Mike Morley was asked three weeks ago about a letter being sent to the State supporting the tax hike for retail.. He said he thought iit would have gone out but would check. A week later he was asked agian and state he thought Nelson was inf avor but not sure if it went out. A week ago asked again and didnt know.. This week he asked that question at open meeting and Nelson dosnet remember signing such a letter.. Then Cilley complained he wasnt for it so now the letter waits for a vote apparently.
My entire point of asking this question in the first place was to see how dysfunctional this council was... I,m getting a good idea how much it is now...
Patty Ritchie is not for it so Nelson dosnt want to piss her off so he is ducking the issue.. Now looking for reasons to override her two percent limit on txes which was nothing more tham a smokescreen to put the burden on the counties and municipalites and make herself look good...
I hope Wayne demands answers to his questions as I do Hosmer and Stevenson as the opresent council is content with whatever Nelson says...
Of course I want to add Mike Morley does not play politics.

Nelson will do nothing to tick off any offical in the GOP this year. At some point this upcoming year I suspect he will announce his canidacy for the run for the 118th against Addie Russell.
All of you folks that voted for Nelson remember this please.. He was going to fire Sciorra.. What happened??? He held some phony staged displays of vote getting to angry crowds at city hall but really what come of them?? Why just single out Sciorra?? Why not Cosmo hes a big reason this happened?? Woods was a rat and we all know it including Nelson but Woods served Nelsons good, by coming back here and being allowed to lie to the crowd...
We dont need property tax hikes to override Ritchies 2percent tax restriction we need a sales tax hike so all can share in this burden.. The logic just isnt there anymore that people will leave the County to shop to avoid the tax.. What County we are only one of five still charging the seven percent....
I hope the council dosnt support any tax reise on us unless the sales tax raise passes here.

It's becoming clear that most of you people who mouth off on this blog are not from Ogdensburg. You obviously don't like our community with the way you look down your nose at the 1,200 area families who work at the prison and the mental health agencies. You spent the past few months telling us to vote for the Democratic candidates who no one supported. You ran down Mary Lou Rupp who won Ogdensburg 5 to 1. You support a sales tax increase that no one in Ogdensburg wants or supports. We don't want to see gasoline increase by four to five cents a gallon. We can't afford an increase in prices of everything we buy just so you can hand the money over to the county Democratic party's donors.
The voters mde it very clear you they are not buying the nonsense you put on this blog.
Ogdensburg has a 100 plus year history of caring for people. We're proud of our history.
If you were actually from here, you'd understand.

Who do these people think they are kidding? I don't want to pay a couple of hundred dollars in extra taxes with a sales tax increase. You keep saying it will "share the burden," but we see it will actually cost working families several hundred dollars in new taxes. Plus, there's no guarantee that the county will share a nickel with Ogdensburg. I wouldn't trust the county legislature.

None of the candidates for city council said they favored increasing prices in Ogdensburg and raising gas prices by a nickel a gallon by raising the sales tax during the campaign. They have no moral authority to raise the sales tax now.
You Democrats who are pushing for a sales tax increase have no concept of what Ogdensbug needs to attract new businesses, new restaurants and new stores. We need every advantage we have. Raising gas prices by a nickel a gallon and adding a couple hundred dollars in sales taxes will not help attract businesses or families to Ogdensburg.
You sales tax supporters the same people who wanted us to think that someone supported Gavin Regan and Jim McCoy

The election demonstrated how out of touch you are with the people who actually live and love Ogdensburg.

WOW..... Nelson supporters crowing, Rupp supporters crowing. Very bad taste for grown people that claim they love Ogdensburg. You must come from the two or three percent that can afford to pay the higher taxes that are coming in the near future.. It dosnt bother you folks because your cars run full all the time, you shop in Watertown and Syracuse at the expensive stores and give them your tax dollars Your math sucks when figuring a sales tax folks.. Your small thinking has kept the visiion for Ogdensburg bleak to say the least.. If you dont like what you see on this or any blog dont cry just go to your big screen TVs or your bars and get drunk...
I think the Sales tax is great but if council dosnt Mike Morley the republican deputy mayor shouldnt say a letter will be sent without knowing what hes talking about..
The Republican party in SLC has failed so badly in the last few years that in was inevitable the democrats take over. Forsythe a republican played with the unions so much and lied to them the county
had an unfair labor practice filed and won by the union..
Regardless how you think your numbers remain the same which means that many members of your stuffy old party have voted democrat over the past seven years. You run a millionaire from ABAy for Congress who spends three to four million of his own money while out partying with his Wall st buddies and shutting down and laying off hundreds of workers so he and about twenty others can have bonuss of six to eitht million dollars... Yup thats the Republican way Here and in the World..
No Nelson will take the stand no new taxes then raise our swere rates along with fees. Then comes water metors...

Anonymous said...

Well, you admit you are a Democrat and think the rest of us ought to pay five cents a gallon more, plus increase the price of everything else just so the Democrats on the county legislature can spend our money.
Thank God no one is paying attention to you and the others who spend their time running down our community and the people who actually live and work here.
No one paid attention to you in the election and for obvious reasons.
You and the other Democratic operatives have an agenda that has nothing to do with what's best for the River City.

I admit nothing to anyone. I remain anom like you because I am a republican ashambed to admit ..
If you feel a 11 vote win for a four term mayor is good then you are admitting this city is split. Those who can afford luxuary and can afford their taxes and sewer rates and us that just get by..
No my friend I am not a democrat but I sure vote for them when I feel its best for us.
I would rather pay a sales tax hike then have my taxes go up . That way people like you can help pay my taxes fro me and the canadians can also put some towards it also. You must be from the proctor avenue crowd..
This city right now is the laughing stock of NYS and its not getting better. Corruption is a good word for this debacle we are in now.. Of course we can all sacrafice the city manager and put a bandaid on it but will not work. The people who gave the manager the guidance and direction they wanted to move in are still in office and nothings going to change.
I,m suppose your proud of your police force who hasnt had any luck over the years with I believe now five murders without a conviction.. Drug houses everywhere and petit theft on the rampart. Every cop on the force has had or has an affair going on during owrking hours and nothing has been done for years about this. Most of the firemen have a second forty hour a week job but they have yet to be looked at for cutting.. Ya I,m a discontent and I am dam well going to keep stating what I feel as long as this author (a repoublican) lets me...

No, based on your inability to spell, your lack of knowledge of grammar, and your complete incomprehension of the rules of punctuation, I don't think you are a Republican. It's clear to me you aren't even bright enough to be a drop out from OFA.

Let's examine your inability to grasp the consequences of the sales tax you appear to want so bad.
First off, it's laughable that you suggest this has something to do with rich people. The rest of us realize that it's poor people and working class people who can least afford a sales tax increase. We already pay too much of our income in taxes at all levels. A sales tax hike, rather than allowing us to "share the burden," actually forces us to pay more in taxes because we are taxed on so much of the essentials we are forced to spend to survive.

No, I think your effort to have the people of Ogdensburg pay an additional five cents a gallon on gasoline and several hundred dollars more on our essential purchases is just a way to transfer what little money we have into the hands of the Democratic operatives in control of the county legislature so they can redistribute it to their various campaign donors to keep themselves in office.

No, you can keep your slurs about our firefighters, our police officers, our correctional officers, our psychiatric workers and the rest of us who actually make the River City work. We're catching on to your real agenda.

And we know it has nothing to do with helping Ogdensburg or the people who live here.

My slurs are facts and hard cold facts.. My spelling and punctuation has never been good but I,m not perfect like you.. If you dont pay the extra in sales tax then you will pay it in property taxes, and higher fees for services you already pay for in taxes. Patty Ritchie helped pass a bill that keeps the tax rate below two percent but almost every municipality in the state will have to go over it. Why? Because our state leaders will not give us mandate relief and the Republican controlled Senate knew that before passing the legislation. I dont look for the democrats to keep control of the legislature in CAnton and then we will see where the Republicans like Forsythe lead us.
My only thought in life as I grew up was to be perfect like you. It didnt happen so I guess I will just have to settle for being discontent spell wrong and generally bad grammar.. If I had better teachers when I went through school it might have helped but most of them left school early left me in study halls and smoked and drank coffee all day. Its better today as smoking dosnt happen much out there now... One thing for sure is we are two peas in a pod in remaining anom so really your no better than me are you?

Simply put by one who has been here for Fifty yrs and an INDEPENDENT politically , Ogdensburg has always seemed to UNDERSELL itself and accept less than the best for economic development.

Settling for second best isn't a strategy , it is a weakness and a cop out

There is absolutely nothing here to RETAIN our best and brightest .

This systemic problem has never been seriously addressed and results in a serious imbalance economically.

There is an over-dependence on the PUBLIC sector. Our best kids do not want to be prison guards or sex workers . Ogdensburg needs to think beyond that type of employment . True it provides jobs for some but we have been the victim of a serious brain drain for several decades .

We need to retain those who are the best students . They will become innovators , the people who have ideas. are entrepreneurial and may actually start the new enterprises yet to be developed .

We can simply be the care taker city of the past . Ogdensburg must change if it is ever to thrive.. NYS state is going broke . Tax revenues are way down . Many are out-migrating

The public sector will continue to decline as tax revenue streams are affected . The budget deficit continues to be a structural problem .

And as an aside The sales tax is not the answer either , nor is fierce maintenance of the status quo here in Ogdensburg

Anonymous said...

Will the last person who leaves Ogdensburg please turn off the lights.

Anonymous said...

The lights have been out here for years friend. We just keep asking for more of the same...
I for one want the sales tax hike in preference to property tax. I wish it didnt have to be. The entire point of this feisty conversation has been Mike Morley acting like they were going to send a letter favoring such a tax. Sam Burns made a presentation of the tax to council. Morley jumped right on the bandwagon.. I asked him time and time again during the next month or two about if the letter had been sent. He though so but didnt know... Bottom line is Morley dosnt know what hes talking about. The mayor and others ducked the question at election time so the mayor wouldnt tick off Pat Ritchie nor any voters...
Point... Just be straight with us guys that would be a good start.

Shocked that Uncle Art was not quoted or consulted on today's story about real jobs potentially coming to the city. Art only gets involved on fantasy projects, and he'd never be smart enough to speak in conditional terms of possibility.

Looks like we're stuck with more years of this arrogant, foolish joker. Hope that OBPA can bail him out and that city staff can keep attracting grant monies for which Art can pretend responsibility.

Anonymous said...

The bridge and port has done their job for years its the city and their joker politicans that have failed...
Quit trying to blame the city manager.. He was given direction by council and followed it.. Only after Nelson found out he was losing this election did Art become an issue... Just ask Mike Morley he dosnt play politics.

It's becoming pretty clear that not only are you not from Ogdensburg, you are simply shilling for the Democratic organization that conned people like Gavin Regan into spending the family fortune on a hopeless race.
Let's be clear. Governor Cuomo led the campaign for the two percent property tax cap and Addie Russell voted for it.
Governor Cuomo won't support your sales tax increase. He's repeatedly said that New York State has no future if it is the highest taxed state in the nation and has the worst business climate. You people talk about bringing jobs here, but it's clear you haven't any idea that raising taxes isn't how its done.

The Dems are on the slide, the people are sick and tired of increasing taxes and fees. NYS has earned the #1 spot for highest taxes in the country.

Dems. lost the Senate, dems almost lost the county, dem lost the county clerk, and Nelson is still Mayor of Ogdensburg.

Anon 11:41 has knows Cuomo will not support a tax hike. Addie jumped on that wagon knowing it would not pass.

Time to end the Art Scorria Debacle should be the title. With his support down to only Daniel Skamperle and Nicholas Vaugn this manager is burnt toast! ( these two clowns have represented this manager only not the taxpayers!!!)City hall is a joke- Mayor and council a mess- dept heads scared to death waiting for his orders - Ogdensburg now sits & smells like a smouldering garbage fire . Go away Art Scorria ..let the citizens of Ogdensburg have a chance to live!!
