WDT:Cigarette tax again blocked

Indian Money, NYS wants their share!
$4.35 just in taxes for NYS, that is incredible.  Who can afford to smoke, but people stand outside businesses in the middle of the winter smoking.  This fight is just beginning and the end is not near.

I do think there are bigger issues that should be addressed on the Indian Nation. The smuggling and drug trade should be the governments first priority.

The Indians are in a win, win on this one. NYS cannot afford the manpower to enforce the tax and quell the uprising that happened years ago.
The drugs and the smuggling has gone on for years. The only arrests that ever happen are the ones the Indians give them.
Why make exceptions for the Indians? We have laws in place for Chili cookoffs and playground rules by NYS health Dept. When enforced, people get upset and angry and turn to our hero Senator Ritchie who solves all these problems... Everyone should write Ritchies office and demand that she do something about the tax money from the Indians... Whats her position on this??

This whole scenario is a testimony to enabling guilt for centuries and America has been good enough to fall for it . IT's TIME GET OVER IT !!

All of our ancestors were exploited in one way or another and yet found a way through hard work and INITIATIVE to rise above the issues within 1-2 generations and be all they could be without constant whining and bickering .

Sorry but,This whole separate nation thing is an artificial construct that needs to be clarified once and for all and appropriate actions taken to stop the bilking of American Taxpayers

IF there is a Separate nation then lets pull out ALL the federal and state tax assisted support to the constituency . This playing BOTH sides is no longer viable financially. Sorry

Well said 801.. Politicans like Ritchie run on the concept of no new taxes and making life easier for us. Its time they stood up and forfill their pledges as we were promised. Imagine if these taxes were gotten the relief we could have from the everyday burdens the state places on us.. Get these taxes but dont spend them on any new projects please.. Comman Ms. Ritchie time to stand up for your constituants and see that these taxes are collected. Time to forfill your pledges to be a good Senator. Quit being just a figurehead that Jim Regan can write about and make him work for change... Also have you checked out the background of Mr. Regan.. It seems all that has been written recently is a matter of court records about him... Shame on you Ms Ritchie for hiring someone withthis type of past.

Why isnt the drug trade and the cigerettts addressed in Ogdensburg. This police force is so pathetic. Thousands of untaxed cigeretttes being sold daily and go only knows how much in drug trafficking is done..
Daily events in Ogdensburg.. Scum bags all over driving nice motercycles and got boats , snowmobiles etc but dont work while our local cops look the other way.
Of course hats off to the front line and our wonderful police force. They got a grant so they can play terrorist cop a few times this year.. So says councilor Powers...
My question to Powers is what do they do the other 364 days a year. It sure isnt enforce the laws around this itiful city...

I wonder how much it is costing NYS to fight this battle?

Anonymous said...

Why wory Poly. Your buddy Ritchie sponsors all the good spending money programs.
Poly.. Are you happy with her performance so far.............

Anonymous said...

Poly... I didnt think so or you and your fellow GOP would be crowing alot.. You have been as quiet as Patty on the issues..
Did you read the piece in the Advance news about the four lane highway.. It seems people are playing games with our last chance for something up here... No names were given but one can only believe that they mean Mayor Nelson, Councilors Vaugh and Powers... I recall them voting against Ogdensburg giving any money towards the proposal to promote the highway.. Of course they changed their vote to yes the following meeting to save face. Who else is blocking the efforts of the highway besides Nelson, Powers and Vaugh.. The rest of the council seems one hundred perecent behind them.... Is this a hidden GOP agenda... It does seem the Democrats started this effort and it hasnt been backed by the GOP people in the county and the city...

Hey 12:10,, do your homework!! They didn't support the budget that the group proposed, because it was POORLY PUT TOGETHER!! They lacked support from many other communities ands counties. Neither of the individuals ever came out and said they did not support a highway in the region!! There concerns mirrored ours in Massena as to the location and placement of the highway and the fact that it did not support the only ports in the region!! The highway group has been under a lot of fire about this marketing plan and their bookkeeping and as of yet have not answered many questions many communities have asked> Are you aware that they have not reached into Lewis and Essex counties as of yet!! Do your homework Rosie!!

There was no budget proposed when they didnt support the action. The people simply asked for some money to advertise the highway. I am unsure what yhou mean by neither.. Nelson, Vaugh and Powers wouldnt support a motion to give the group any money to lobby. Your correct about they are under fire. they are under fire by Republicans and a small group of Democrats.
The consept of the four lane highway wss introduced years ago and supported by Democrats by Labaff, Carter and the late Dan Duprey. Their counterparts have had very little to do with any part of any effort to make this real and have thrown up roadblock after roadblock and tried to tarnish this effort.
Like I said Nelson, Vaugh and Powers voted against any money for a lobby only to change their vote a week later to save face. Thats fact my Republican friend . This has nothing to do with Steve Roses problem with these three individuals. His problems is entirely a personal matter with these people. They have ignored their duties in favor of not making a City Manager do his...

OK the entire slate is in need of change in the Burg IF the city is move forward with any real future other than Prison Nation . Let's be objective , the Burg is in woeful shape , the neighborhoods are deteriorating , Drug addled crime is a serious issue to public safety .

100 % of The tax structure is borne by 27 % of the assessed valuation of taxpayers . The mall is a disaster , the private sector is in decline for the most part . There hasn'nt been a new residential housing development in 30 yrs . The school system has lost darn near 50 % of its enrollment yet inspite of a tremendous surplus of facilities built under 95/5 aid formula they are spending 57 million on a new elementery and middle school .

Things are getting DIRE here . Leadership is needed . Our leaders were not even INVITED to be involved with the firm who produces wind turbines that would potentially employ 1200 that has been investigating Massena and OBurg and other potential locations . What does this say about being out of touch . The city is over-dependent upon prisons and sexually violent predator facilities to sustain employment . These neither add to the city 's image or potential to attract other private sector investment .

So many problems - -so little action -- TIME for Change

They could have been involved. Nelson and Nichols wanted every thing their way with the commission formed for local business between Lisbon Oswegatichi Bridge and Port and Ogdensburg.. People like Cieora and Woods with their anti people attitude helped drive the town of Lisbon and the bridge out of the picture. Like I said they could have been involved bt istead they put their efforts into Prison futures up here. The obvious thing happened the people at the Bridge went at this project alone with nothing but smoke from the city.. They at least have a nibble... Of course if any positive comes of this Nelosn and the other two will be out bowing and crowing..
One thign for sure is we need some relief from this institutional thing around here. Even though it hurts it would not be a bad thing to have OCF down. It might ignate some interest in finding some industry into this area.
Its gotten so between the three named its rare they are all at a meeting anymore. Nelson partying in Auruba, Powers working away, and Vaugh kissing a== whereever he can.. Your right 354 its time for a change.

Ogdensburg is is woefull shape because of three major factors
1. Fort Drum overflow and scum started comingt here years ago because of the cheap rent
2. Prison and Institutional atmoshphere brought its share of scum with them
3. Lack of leadership. This city and is leaders are more obsessed with cometics of the riverfront than the gerneral appearance of the city itself.. Just go to a council meeting .. Watch who dresses casually and trys to do their job. Watch who wears the suits to appeal to the cameras..
4. We also need a new direction for our local authoritites and the courts in this area... Its pretty sad when our criminals repeat time and time again and get drug court or probation while we house inmates rrom other counties that are prosecuting criminals.. That dosnt even make sense.
We certainly need help locally but no one seems to step up.. It is time for a change.

Right on all counts the Burg is in terrible shape because the talent has left the stage .

It got educated and LEFT the city and the remaining "talent" is Turned off by politics and the sleazy atmosphere that surrounds it including the media .

Many remaining successful people have retreated inward , feathered their nests and have either moved out of the city to the river or have enough $$ to travel frequently to soothe the ache of living here .

Its the POGO effect: We 've met the enemy it is US--- because we won't run for office , won't get involved in the fray and mess of politics.

SO folks we have REGRESSION to the mean in terms of leadership and THAT is WHY we are in the shape we are in .

If Younger or mid-life professionals WANT MEANINGFUL change to occur it's TIME FOR THEM to step up to the plate and get involved and assume the mantle of leadership. Otherwise the future will be bleak indeed.

Its hard to fight City Hall.. Those that dare are given their five minutes to state their problems and complaints. Council sits and looks stupid which is easy . Then they will look into the matter, then nothing is done..
Why no murder suspects yet? Council dosnt hold the chief accountable.. The chief dosnt hold the cops accountable and on and on.
Mr Wells brought to the attention of council a business operating in a residental district.. All talk but nothing done about it.. Mr Rose has made the three amigos look stupid now they are persecuting him through the manager. Nelson kid got a great job with the city but the manager hired him so thats no nepatisim. Councilor Vaugh didnt shw up for several meetings until another republican councilor wanted him to step down.. He lied about his reason and the mayor backed him so it past... This crap goes on and on and nothing can sem to be done. Election Time in November we need to vote for a change and be sure we get it.
A mayor that poses for FAcebook in Aruba to show us that the prosperous can play while the rest of the taxpayer pay.. thats what we have.. A mayor that thumbs his nose at us in this manner.
