Jornal:City Looks For Parking Code Violations

Parking Violations will Be ENFRORCED

Drugs crimes are down, there has not been a murder in a couple of months, and it is time to step up the OPD's efforts on controlling parking violations.  This should generate much needed revenue for the city and at least clean-up errant parking.  They could concentrate their efforts in a 5 block radius around Claxton Medical Center which has and continues to be a parking nightmare.  The hospital have never had the necessary parking for their employees and patients.  It would be easy to get 20 - 30 tickets a day around the hospital.

The hospital tried to get part of the adjacent park to offset there parking needs, but that effort was met with much resistance from the community.  It appears to be one of the more popular parks. Currently the hospital owns half the houses in the block across from the Emergency Entrance, which could be used for parking. Currently these houses are rented to Doctors that practice at the hospital.

We all need to be aware of our vehicle placement when parking a vehicle.  I do agree sidewalks should not be blocked which would force pedestrians into the street. So beware if you are parking in Ogdensburg, the OPD is out and you will get a ticket!

Remember:
* No parking on sidewalks.
* No parking less than 20 feet from a crosswalk.
* No parking more than 12 inches from a curb.
* No parking less than 15 feet from a fire hydrant.
* No parking in handicapped spaces unless permitted.

I think parking less than 10 feet from a driveway is illegal and that happens a lot.

I agree that any parking on the sidewalk OR in the space between the crb and the sidewalk should be prohibited and VIGOROUSLY enforced

Parking should BE RESTRICTED to one side of the street ESPECIALLY in WINTER given the numbers of OVERSIZED vehicles that exist. These make it impossible to drive on Morris ST (FOR EXAMPLE) in the winter near the Cathedral when snow and ice narrow the drivable surface coupled with oversized vehicles parked on BOTH sides of the street BLOCK normAL TRAFFIC FLOW .

This is not limited to Morris ST but includes many other busy thru streets but Morris is particularly difficult

I have brought this issue to city council and suggested a need for a current traffic flow study reflective of today's needs and further suggested perhaps commissioning a series of ONE way thru streets between Ford and Canton St as a way to get the problem resolved in a COST effective manner .

Moreover Restricting 2 way traffic flow and SPREDING it to OTHER thru alternating one way streets would also BALANCE the load on the street itself and result in fewer Maintenance issues as well as solve the parking problems .

After speaking with Councilman Powers he was good enough to present it to his peers . HE was told the Police had a traffic study done THIRTY YEARS AGO -- My God in 30 yr vehicles have been supersized and MOST families today own 2/3 vehicles .

I thank Mr Powers for taking it to council and he did make the effort .

BUT C'mon guys get this simple problem solved . LEAD /ACT-- do something that UPDATES the traffic flow and parking problems caused by allowing 2 side parking on two way streets on EXTREMELY congested venues --ESPECIALLY during the winter .
.
A 30 yr old study is no longer VALID today. Boy that is really DEFENDING the status Quo

The next construction Hepburn hospital does should be for a parking garage. The hospital has created a nightmare for the taxpayers of the second ward. The houses that the hospital owns that now are rented to the doctors should be taken down and more parking made or a parking garage created underground and at least two tiers above. The Park should be and always be off limits for any discussion about parking.

Enforcement is the problem. Complaint only is the policy. Why?? The cops continuaslly drive by illegally parked vehicles. Are their eyes closed? I dont think so.
They want to pit neighbor against neighbor and they know most neighbors wont turn theirs in for these minor things so if the cops wont enforce it take it off the books... I personally am a believer that if a law is made it took some thought and effort to make it. It was made for a reason. To not enforce it is not proper. Laws should not be seasonable but in this case it could be made to be the same as the winter parking rules from Nov. to April....
I have a problem with our local police and their enforcement policies. Laws are made to be enforced. I know they cry foul when I talk like this but reaLLY ARE THEY THAT BUSY?

A volunteer police force would help eliminate this type of problem. This is the type of thing volunteers could handle without involving the prima donas that work for us.. Other parts of the state have them why cant we?
The Sheriffs dept had a volunteer force under Knowlton. It worked just fine. They wrote parking tickets etc.. There was som3e legal problems but they got solved..

The law is what it is, hard to believe they would allow parking on sidewalks in the winter time. Go figure. Then again most of the sidewalks are not shoveled.

It will raise some revenue, and maybe I will be able to see down the road when I back out of my driveway. Parking is a problem around the Hospital.

Its simple Poly as to why they arent shoveled.. Non enforcement.. Bring it to the attention of council and they say oh. the cops have better things to do.. Complaint only, then they arent the bad guys..
Three years ago Nelson said at an open meeting the code was going to be enforced.. It wasnt.. Flynn questioned the mayor during a session his last year on council and the mayor stated he didnt say that or he couldnt recall saying that...
The entire problem is enforcement. Dont make laws they cant enforce. If they make the law enforce it. If the cops dont enforce it make them responsible. Quit being hypocrites about things. The parking in the three or four block radius around the hospital is a nightmare as stated. Encourage the hospital to put a parking garage up on some of their existing property with multi levels.
Pay a cop overtime to write tickets and put a quoto on him. It would more than pay for itself. Or look into the suggestion of a volunteer force to assist the local police as stated above.

Then again doesn't our mayor work for the hospital. Might be why they never have or will have enough parking for employees and patients.
