Journal:Vandalism Strikes CityParks

Park Vandalism
Vandalism the willful or malicious destruction, injury, disfigurement, or defacement of public or private property and is increasing in Ogdensburg.  Studies show that kids that perform acts of vandalism peak at age 16. Over time the cost of vandalism adds up substantially.  The parks have been ravished by destructive individuals over the years. Many of the plastic play equipment has been cut and riddled with graffiti.  With tight budgets replacement is not the answer but a little maintenance would not hurt.  Kids Kingdom has held up well over the years but is showing signs of weathering.  The park is used every day and a little prevented maintenance would not hurt.

Vandalism should not be tolerated, and the parents should be held accountable for the cost of repair and fined.  Most of the vandalism is at night and could renew the City's position on curfews. Setting a curfews has been addressed by the City Council but it has always been a hot topic.  I have mixed feelings on setting a curfew.  This law would replace the duty of the parents, currently there are no laws against poor parenting so maybe a curfew is the only choice.

I havnt read one article about any move to impliment a volunteer police force such as the Sheriff had in the late 90s. It it worked as it was implimented. The problem is that we had no leaders with the forditude of Keith Knowlton or Gary Jarvis..
It worked because these men made t work.
The asked for volunteers. They got numerous ones. They uniformed them and gave them limited authority, trained them for what they were to do and oversaw such.
Sure there were headaches. Liability is high but not to the degree you think. These people helped out at fair time during the seaway festivle, numerous parades during the summer throughout the county, they wrote parking violations. They didnt have arrest powers but could summons those that did. They drove cars throuout the county assigned just to them.. Their equipment didnt cost much as they usually were assigned the used material. Put these people on the street and watch some of the crime stop locally..
This would work better than neighborhood watches. This would work better than no effort at all which is what we have now. Kids gathering on the streets would be disbursed by using these people.
Ths program could work with a little effort by council, manager and the chief plus the police union..

Parents of vandals should be held financially responsible. And if caught this little Bastids need to do a few nites in the county lockup

Parents can be held responsible but the kids if too young cant be put in jail..
Kids are defiant today so what do you do with a fourteen or fifteen year old that tells his parents f=== off and walks out of the house.. If the parent strikes him/her they would be arrested if not you want to hold them responsible.... Court system is weak in this county and the faact the legislaors want to make money on the new jail, we jail inmates from other countys while ours get probation or drug court..
This is due to weak legialators like Acres, Burns, Akins, Putney and Morrill.....

NO doubt !!! There is need for serious reform in the legal and judicial systems .

As for that 15 yr old there is still plenty you can do to .Behavior must have consequences . There are financial penalties you could enact , there are other interventions that can be enacted , curfews .

The behavior starts at home , what specific environment did the parents FAIL to inculcate during the kids infancy , childhood and adolescence to begin to mold character . Sitting on the couch with a beer n' chips or hanging in the bars while letting the kids do as they damn well please WITH no INVOLVEMENT and NO CONSEQUENCES starts the process of youthful decline in behavior .

If as a parent you HAVE expectations and IF as a parent you are involved and NOT acting as their BUDDY or worse ABSENTEE parent , and IF as a parent you reinforce both positive results and negative results with feedback and consequences you have a BETTER chance of creating an environment where the kid will flourish .

It ain't rocket science but ir is hard work and you you have to be there and establish BOTH expectations AND consequences .

Don't throw your hands up and say what am i going to do -- GET BUSY . After all when they are born they are ready to be PARENTED and you get out of the process WHATEVER you as a parent put into it

That all boils down to what can I do? Kids need attention.. The attention a lot of us got when we were young and crazy.. You know, th kind you got behind the house, or in the woodshed.. Like it or not if some kid got his a-- blistered today for acting up yu would have soe good hearted teacher or neighbor calling the cops.. They are traine to listen to the kid and then they would arrest the parent that disiplined them... Its true and you all know it.. Dept of social services would investigate and be glad to have the parent charged today... Its a no win situation for the parents..

Pure utter Nonsense 9:18! You're closing the barn door after the livestock has left .

You don't wait till the kid is a teenager to START - AND you don't need physical violence .

You NEED consistency, repetition, consequences and early intervention . Hitting has never solved anything.
