Journal:Council Passes Budget On 4-3 Vote

Budget Passes
It was a close vote 4-3 and Mayor Nelson's budget passes. We did have a change from the Nelson, Cilley, Powers, Vaughn vote. Mr. Sholette voted for the budget and Mr. Powers voted against it.  I wonder why there is an increase to the water rates?  Maybe everyone one should be paying their fair share.

Maybe they should start enforcing the rules evenly across the board.   Chadwick Reality is still considered a residential building and they have been running a business out other for years.  They force every other business to have a water meter and tax them accordingly.  Stevenson's Auto Center was forced to get a water meter because they are a business and they have a 3 x 3 bathroom.  Neighbors are complaining about individuals running a wood carving business from their home; who in turn complains about Tyvek still on houses in the area.  I was driving down the 2nd or 3rd block of Knox Street and noticed a 6 foot fence running the length of the front yard.  I put my fence up and the code enforcement officers was at my front steps stating the front fence could only be 4 foot.

Ogdensburg needs to stay the course and treat every resident the same.  Double standards is no way to treat tax payers that pay the salaries of these individuals.

Taxes and more taxes!

There are some tough decisions to made. I have to thank the council for making many of them. I do not agree with everything but I think they put together a good budget considering the economy.

Mr. Nelson has stood up at this point and took the bull by the horns. I do agree he needs to concentrate on public safety.

They made no tough decisions. They raised taxes. They will hire five new officers for nothing to change.
Why hasnt Chadwick moved or better yet why hasnt the city done anything. Its their job

The suggestion has been made to look into forming a citizens patrol such as the Sheriff Dept had a few years ago. This was started by and supported by Sheriff Knowlton but Sheriff Jarvis had to suspend it until legal litigation was settled. He decided not to restart the program. It is a program that has worked in other counties and cities throughout the state. It helps curb overtime costs, free up officers from some of their more trivial duties and adds a police presence to the streets of the city. There was a liability issue that the State Courts decided a few years ago.. I would be a very minimal effort for the City to look into it. It wouldnt interfere with any officers being hired nor should it have any laid off.. These people would be limited in their duties and certainly their authority...LOOK INTO IT GENTLEMEN it could be a very good money saver.
