Journal:Ogdensburg considering smoking ban in municipal parks

Smoking BAN in Parks?
I have to agree with Mr. Ashley and R. Storm Cilley, why legislate something that is not enforceable. Where was everyone when they wanted to keep sex offenders from the park. I wonder how much they are enforcing that law. That law was only a distance of 500' which let them live a 1/2 a block away. They should of made it 2000' and we could of eliminated many of our sex offenders.

This is political posturing and we need to move on.

My personal feelings is that only a moron would try and legislate something like this.. Nick Vaugh and Mayor Nelson made a pathetic attempt four years ago to do this.. It only ended up with the majority of the council using their heads and downing in.. Signs placed in areas of concern, stating please refrain from smoiking would be enough..
If they are going to enforce this as law, then we must demand they enforce, the parking on sidewalds, parking in the medium between sidewalks, shovleing sidewalks in winter jaywalking . Oversize wehicles still park on the streets but its not enforced..
Let me give you one small example of why things should be enforced.. Drive by the five hundred block of Renneselar Ave. Going towards Morristown on your left theirs an area of the medimum between the sidewalk and road thats is being parked on.. The rut is so deep that a child apparently rolled their bike the other day and got hurt.. For the fun I went and measured the debpth of the hole and its forteen inches.. Thats a lawsuit waiting to happen.. The city is liable because its their responsibility, and the fact that they have an ordinance banning parking their and dont enforce it makes the city twice as liable....
We dont need more laws that cant be enforced.. Anyone that votes for this is an idiot...
Hey Mike Morley check it out its in your neighborhood its 526 Rens Ave I believe.....

You forgot one thing 954.. It was voted on and the manager given direction four or five years ago.. He didnt accept this so it was brought up a second time by Sciorra.. He was again given direction by the majority of council but Nelson persited and had Sciorra send out a trumpted up questionaire trying one more time to pass the law.. Again clearer heads prevailed.. The only ones voting for the law were Nelson, Vaugh and Hannan

You're right, we don't need more laws we can't enforce - first we need to be able to enforce the laws we do have. That means restructuring the police department and getting rid of the dead weight at the top. That also means turning the fire department into a volunteer one. If larger and faster growing communities like Potsdam and Canton have volunteer fire departments, so should a smaller, shrinking community like Ogdensburg. We also need to close the pool and the public marina as there is no reason to keep them open - people can swim in the rivers and use one of the new private marinas to dock their boats. Once the city stops throwing money randomly at things it can't/shouldn't do, it can focus on cleaning itself up and rebuilding its tarnished image.

There are more serious issues to attend to for law enforcement than this drivel. We have druggies running around causing havoc , we have sexual perverts loose in the city. A week doesn't go by when we get a notice from the County Sheriff that another Pervert has moved to within a mile of our home.

City Councilors from that era refused to do anything to prevent the Perv palace from taking our waterfront and sat on their duffs while these druggies , pervs and low lives take over the city.

WE have a plethora of debate on waterfront and even that has moved at a glacially sloooww pace. For well over 3 decades i heard politicians TALK about new housing on the waterfront and and improving the Quality of Life here and the results have been minimal .

. Get going enforce laws that are on the books . Put teeth into enforcement .

We couldn't even get stop signs put on our street to SLOOOW down speeders who may probably be high on something. What a bureaucratic morass that was . the lethargy and defense of the status quo on that simple request was unbelievable.

No, someone will have to die first b4 anything gets done . WE then Asked for a new traffic study and revised parking regs and consideration for implementing one way streets or one side parking to alleviate congestions and the abudance of oversize vehicles which clog BOTH sides of the street making passage difficult especially in winter

I was told by a former councilor -- WE HAD A STUDY DONE 30 YEARS ago ! Amazing OMG , they fail to realize and see the problems or refuse to see how the circumstances have changed in 30 yrs time . Back then few had multiple BIG vehicles etc .

That's what we deal with here in Ogdensburg --

C'mon a smoking ban ???? -- why not get after real and serious issues?

Government regulaltions. Why is it that once people get elected, and get comfortable with their new position they attempt to at some point attempt to pass petty regulations to impose their will on you..
Smoking is bad.. Smoking is dangerous for ones health and others in certain instances. Ask people to comply with things and you get much better results.. Most smokers are aware their addiction is offensive to others and dont have to be asked twice to refrain..
First and utmost Skamperele should worry about his own offensive habits of life and not those of others.. Nelson also should set an example and quit trying to impose his beliefs and will on others.
I did drive up Rens Ave just a while ago and theres the kind of law that should be enforced before the city gets sued.
The blogger is right in saying its in Morleys area but Skamperele live closer...

Our charter states the mayor must live within the city limits..
Nelson lives in Lisbon.. He used his sons address as his residence.. Thats a lie... Residence is defined as usual place of abode which is Lisbon.. Mailing Address is where politicans play...
Let council work on that Law and enforcement of it...

Could someone give me an intelligent answer to this... The County Manager Karen St Hillaire has claimed for four years they were cutting jobs and not replacing position.. They claim some one hundred or so positions eliminated..
But you take a simple look at county records and it shows there is more county employees today than four years ago .. How can that Be////////

Ive heard a rumor That Matt Doheny is going to try and sneak into our parade in person.. Nelson has attempted to have Doheny introduced as a guest of his and his paid band will attempt to flood the parade with shirts etc etc..
This bacicly is against all of what our parade stood for over the years and its another ploy by a politican to get exposure.. It should not be allowed under any circumstances...
On the other hand Pat Ritchie people have come to parades and handed out litature in the past and thats permissable.. Patty marched in the past as an elected officsl..
Doheny had the nerve to show up in Utica at a hospital expansion and put a shovel in hand and slid into a group picture for exposure.. Again he wasnt welcome and it caused the hospital officals some uncomfortable minutes as many people who had put a lot of effort into this expansion were not allowed in the picture..
Doheny in the past has showed very little integirity on such issues so I am hoping our Festivle committee keeps him in line..

Just boycott the stupid parade - it is just a poor excuse for public intoxication anyway.

No longer a FAMILY event the parade has become a FREAK show . Unfortunately pervs , druggies , drunks , and other low life denizens prowl the parade route with their legal and mebbe not so legal substances in full display .

Uh no thanks , this has become a disaster . Its too bad because the volunteers that dedicate many hrs to this event work hard to pull it off and deserve support but man the environment is scary and nasty. Too much drinking and lord knows what else

Im glad I have to work this weekend so I do not have to attend the parade. I wish my kids didn't even know about it. I don't feel safe letting my wife take them by herself. Pretty sad because when I was my oldest son's age they parade was fun and safe for kids. Now its just a bunch of drunks and druggies.
