| Cuomo Announces Prison Closures |
The list is finally out and the Watertown HUB is not included in the closures. The following prisons will be closed and the communities have been promised 10 million dollars for economic development.
The prisons are:
–Buffalo Work Release (Erie County)
– Camp Georgetown (Madison County)
– Summit Shock (Schoharie County)
– Fulton Work Release (Bronx County)
– Arthur Kill (Richmond County)
– Mid-Orange (Orange County)
– Oneida (Oneida County)

It would not be an economic meltdown it would have been an opportunity for Ogdensburg to diversify and develop more private sector initiatives and NOT be so dependent on prisons , Sexual predator resorts and the social decay that follows.
Sorry i'm not of the opinion that prisons are an asset at all.
Where are all the idiots who were certain that OCf would close. What a bunch of whine asses. Not a jail in the region hit, Why because the high and mightys can't bear the fact that these jobs are good jobs and would have huge effect on the region.

Yep and the North Country is the DUMPING ground for the rest of the state's sleezeballs--Great Image makes me a warm and fuzzy . Come to the North Country and see druggies pervs and prisnahs !! Hey what a bumper sticker for tourism.
If OCF closed Ogdensburg would be a ghost town except for the drug dealers and sexual predators. Many want to blame these conditions on the prison but they are not the big problem.
Two major events happened that lead to the demise of Ogdensburg. First was ANR affordable housing that lured the undesirables into the city. You can thank our great leads for that free money and with it came the dirt bags.
The second major problem was Fort Drum's expansion. This pushed every low and no income individual out of Watertown and the surrounding area to an area with cheap housing, public transportation, and a hospital...Ogdensburg being the prime location. 60 - 70 percent of the hospital's reimbursements come from public aide.
Losing the prison would increase the number of cheap houses in the City...room for more crack and dope houses.
The Governor goal was to reduce the number of beds in an oversized prison system. Doing so without effecting OCF is a plus for the taxpayers and the City of Ogdensburg.

I agree with the first commentator. Its nice to have the prisons but if they leave it could create more private sector jobs. Of course our leaders Nelson and Co would have to work a ittle more. I think the one really good chance recently probably slipped away when the entire City staff and Coucil were in the dark about a employer who would employ up to 1200 people was interested in our area... Of course now Nelson and his puppetts can lay back and work some more on the Greenbelt and riverfront in the City whil the rest of us try and figure ways to put Ogdensburg back on the map..
One good thing came of this year and that is Vaugh and Powers are no longer interested in serving on the Council and kissing the mayors butt..
Campaign is in full swing in the Burg.. With the canidates running it appears Hosmer, Mooney and Stevenson are leading so far.. The ex cop Ashley has the biggest name recognition but most people seem distant about an ex employee of the city serving on council... I dont know why.. We elected ex teachers up here to our school board mos of the time either that or wives and husbands of the teachers.... Wayne would be a good choice..
I am concerned about Ashley's ability to be objective he has a public pension and health insurance paid for by the taxpayers so i feel he would NOT be able to be without BIAS on any vote to reduce either the payroll or benefits --that is why i cannot vote for him .

Anon 11:15 what does the prison got to do with creating private jobs. Sometimes people just do not make sense. Losing a 28 million dollar prison payroll would be a major lost to the area, believe it or not.
If you think ANR was so great take a look at the clientele on the corner of Ford and Paterson.
Many on this blog are haters of the prisons, those employed by the prison, and for what reason? I still cannot figure it out.

Cutting prisons frees up $$$ for more productive investment in real economic development from the private sector that generates tax revenue from businesses as well as from their payrolls THAT my friend is the DIFFERANCE.
IN addition the PRIVATE sector do not cost taxpayers payroll , bennies and capitol improvement and maintenance and operational costs
Prisons are strictly unproductive OVERHEAD( Cost centers not profit centers) and they do NOT add to the Quality of Life in the region and in fact attract OTHER types of social problems ,
Nor do they generate business tax revenue streams

Prison COs think they have a very special job. Like a doctor or teacher etc.. Not so... The only education needed is high school or GED. Training in Albany by other uneducated persons who work by habit like factory piece workers. Inmates babysitters is exactly what they should have been called. They serve no purpuse in a community in fact most comute to Ogdensburg. They cost us tax dollars but they serve no purpose except to make life orderly in that facility. They whine about watching 25 inmates... If given their way they would have one inmate and two turnkeys to each. They are trained and sworn in a peace officers. they can carry weapons and are trained how to shoot.. However they cant carry thes weapons where they work.. Makes sense heh... Just an example is they read books all night or take catnaps on the job.. For this we pay orr takes. They have no rules about hiring those that have committed misdemeanors and many have. They can become drug addicts and when found out a bout they get rehab at our expense and cant be fired or charged... Comman guys thats the truth about prisons and the carreer jobs
ALL of which is why NYS should GET OUT of the business of EXPENSIVE babysitting and Privatize the system
NYSCOPBA ruined the system with their greed and featherbedding, and general resemble exactly what happened in the auto industry with union featherbedding
