Journal:Police unions have contracts, get pay hikes

Ogdensburg Police Department Settles!

Well lieutenants and sergeants just settled for about 4.5% for 2012 and 3.7% for 2013.  The road patrol officers settled for 2.75% which increased the separation between officers' pay and sergeants' pay. The Department was losing officers to other agencies because the difference in pay was so little between officers and sergeants.

Compared to other local police depts I understand Ogdensburg is one of the highest paid and underqualified.
State police make more but Sheriffs Deputies have made a habit over the years of leaving the Sheriff and signing on with these local municipalities. Canton and Potsdam and Massena all make good money I,m not sure about Gouverneur..
Witht he times as they are I think it was too much to give to them because of all the incentives they have already built into their contracts that we will be paying for.
This dept has a history of blotching up high profile cases of Rape and murder and this dept is notorious for their officers speaking non-truthful statements to jurys and the public during these trials.. The present murder case being tried will either be plea bargained down or found not guilty all because of the work in preparing their case. Then the chief here and chief Currier of Massena can blame the DA
I feel bad about the way it goes down here in the Burg because the majority of the police officers try hard to do a good job but get dragged down by the deadbeat cops who only want the OT and pension after twenty...

You are so correct. The OPD members are overpaid. The Chief is a joke. When you factor in medicare and retirement the city has to pay each officer it amounts to additional 23 percent on top of their base pay. Good luck Ogdensburg tax payers.

Our costs just keep escalating so I feel we should start expecting, and demanding more for our buck..
Did anyone ever find out exactly how much the firing of the city manager cost ??? Attorney fees our attorney and his plus investigating the affair. The cost of paying Cosmo more for that time until a new manager was found and oh yah how much exactly Sciorra got.. How much does the city still pay towards his retirement etc... Anyone...

Wages is not the only reason people leave that department. There is a lot of back door and behind the scence things that happen there. That place need to be cleaned up.

While this cop shop discussion is going I take note the Massenas lawmakers took some steps to curb vandalisim and crime on their streets by passing a curfew law... Its up to their cops to enforce it now.. The difference is their chief will make it happen ours wont. Our lawmakers should sit up and take some notice instead of always following....

That law would never work in Ogdensburg. As you couldn't enforce the curfew law on relative of a city council member. The police in Ogdensburg are a reative police dept. They sit at there station only leave when they get called to a complaint. Nevr patrol The chief in Ogdensburg is a yes man doesn't dare to speak out to the city counsel as he like to look after himself. Plus there is still a lot of coruption at the city p.d. that need s to be delt with

Our politicians LEAD????? You are delusional , they are BARELY literate , and you want them to lead ?????

If you want real leaders you will have to search long anf hard for them in THIS town . Real leaders have long ignored public service and that has resulted in the current dilemma

Ogdensburg was an industrial city up until the early seventies and by the eightys it has become an institutional city. Psyc unit, Perv unit, two prisons and AB Hepburn hospital are all that matter now. The canadian businesses that once thrived in commerce park have long since left some south of our borders.
Our city infrastructure is a disaster. Our cities appeal to anyone is none except for the waterfront developement which only accomodates the people with money and boats. Most of the houses in this city are run down and many of the homeowners cannot afford to fix them up and many are just too lazy to do so. Drug users and dealers in every neighborhood and a police dept that dosnt deal with the real problems. Unemployment is very high with no chance of any consequential employement locally.
We have a rag for a local newspaper and now we are looking at an invasion of chinese comming.

Future here is pretty bleak

Seems like the only people settling are private citizens - and for less product at a higher price, as it turns out.
